Main Beach, East Hampton

Main Beach sits at the foot of Ocean Avenue in East Hampton Village, a wide ocean beach with lifeguards on duty from 10 to 5 on open days. The village flies colored flags to show surf conditions, and no flag means no swimming. Non-residents can pay for daily parking in Lot 2 through ParkMobile, or ride the free seasonal Hamptons Circuit shuttle from the long-term lot.

Know before you go

Best conditions: A green flag signals calm conditions under the village flag system; always swim near a lifeguard.
Getting in: Village of East Hampton beach at 104 Ocean Avenue; one of three lifeguard-protected village beaches.
Parking & transport: Daily non-resident parking in Main Beach Lot 2 is $50 per day through the ParkMobile app, May 15 to September 15; 15-minute spaces at the head of the beach need no permit. A free long-term lot off Lumber Lane connects to Main Beach by the seasonal Hamptons Circuit shuttle.
Lifeguards: Lifeguards on duty 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days the protected beaches are open.
Water quality: Suffolk County Department of Health Services monitors bathing beaches from May through September, testing marine beaches for enterococci and issuing advisories around heavy rainfall.
Who swims here: The village runs a Junior Lifeguard program for ages 9 to 15 with ocean swimming instruction and an opening-weekend run-swim-run.
Watch for: Rip currents: the village directs swimmers to ask a lifeguard and check the flag
