Fort Lauderdale Beach (Sebastian Street)

Fort Lauderdale's central beach runs along the two-mile wave wall and beachfront promenade, with open Atlantic water off guarded sand. The Swimming Hall of Fame and the Aquatic Center, home of a big Masters team, sit a short walk south, and the Swim Fort Lauderdale Beach races ran here from 2015 to 2018. Lifeguards are on duty every day, so swim between the towers.

Getting in: Open public beach along State Road A1A and the Fort Lauderdale Beachfront Promenade, whose wave wall runs about two miles.
Lifeguards: Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue staffs 20 towers every day of the year, including holidays, from Fort Lauderdale Beach Park to NE 18th Street.
Water quality: Florida Department of Health Healthy Beaches Program samples the 'Sebastian Street' site for enterococci bacteria every 1–2 weeks depending on county (Good 0–35, Moderate 36–70, Poor 71+ per 100 mL); an advisory is issued when a sample and its resample both exceed 70.
Season: Year-round; guarded every day.
Who swims here: Swim Fort Lauderdale Beach open-water races were held annually from 2015 through 2018 as part of the Swim Miami series. The Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center, training base of Swim Fort Lauderdale (SFTL) Masters, a 400-plus-member USMS club whose members race in pool, open water and triathlon, shares its site with the International Swimming Hall of Fame near the beach.
