London Lidos and Open-Water Swims: A Local Guide

Last checked: 23 September 2026. Opening hours, prices and booking rules change with the seasons and sometimes the operator, so confirm on each official page before you travel.

London has more outdoor water than most visitors expect. There are historic lidos and a heated 50-metre pool you can swim in all winter. There's a lake in Hyde Park and three natural ponds on Hampstead Heath. They differ a lot in temperature, season and booking, so it pays to know which is which.

At a glance

Tooting Bec Lido

Tooting Bec Lido is the giant. The operator, Places Leisure, calls it the UK's largest freshwater outdoor pool, at 91 metres. The South London Swimming Club (SLSC) puts it at 100 yards long by 33 yards wide. It is unheated and chlorinated, with a children's paddling pool, a café and a sunbathing area.

Seasons. In 2026 the lido is open to the public from 1 May to 30 September. From 1 October to 30 April, only SLSC members can swim. In winter the lido opens at 7am or sunrise, whichever is later, and the water is cleared at 1.45pm. The club races at 9.30am every Sunday and bank holiday, when swimming pauses briefly, and it holds races on Christmas Day too.

Water temperature. The SLSC says the water can reach 20°C in summer and fall as low as 1°C in winter, sometimes with ice on top. The club posts a live temperature on its website.

Booking. Places Leisure runs the lido for Wandsworth Council. In summer, book through Places Leisure's website or app to be sure of a place, especially on sunny days. Bookings are non-refundable. Members don't need to book in winter; they use a members' gate.

Winter swimming. If you want to swim year-round, you'll need an SLSC membership. The club asks newcomers to tell the lifeguards if it's their first cold swim. It also asks them to acclimatise through autumn rather than starting in January.

Brockwell Lido

Brockwell Lido is a 50-metre outdoor pool in Brockwell Park, off Dulwich Road in south London. It opened in 1937 and is open all year round. Beyond the pool there's a gym, fitness classes, a steam room and a café.

Who runs it. Lambeth Council owns the lido. In 2026 its management moved from Fusion to the council's own Active Lambeth service. Memberships moved across, and bookings are now made on the Active Lambeth website or app. The independent Brockwell Lido Users group represents swimmers.

Winter. Active Lambeth sells a swim-only seasonal membership for winter, covering 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. The operator doesn't describe the pool as heated. Junior members can't swim when the water is below 15°C, and a live pool temperature page lets you check before you go.

Booking. Book a lido swim online in advance. Prices and session times are on the Active Lambeth Brockwell Lido page.

Parliament Hill Lido

Parliament Hill Lido sits on the edge of Hampstead Heath, three minutes' walk from Gospel Oak station. It is 60 metres long, open-air, unheated and chlorinated, and it opens every day of the year. The City of London Corporation runs it.

Summer. From May to late September the day is split into sessions. There's a breakfast drop-in, bookable morning and afternoon sessions, and evening lane swimming for adults only on some weekdays.

Winter. From 28 September 2026 to 30 April 2027, the lido opens at 7am with last entry at 1pm. A sauna opens for the winter season, from late September or early October until May. Sauna tickets are for adults only, bought in person on the day, on top of a swim ticket.

Booking. Bookable sessions run only from late May to early September. Tickets are released online at 8pm each day for up to a week ahead. The rest of the year every session is pay on arrival. For 2026 the booking system closed on 7 September and reopens in spring 2027. The City's swimming sites go cashless from 1 October 2026.

Temperatures. The City publishes weekly water temperatures for the lido and the ponds. The lido read 18°C on 21 September 2026. Its published readings have ranged from 1°C in January to 24°C in summer.

London Fields Lido

London Fields Lido is the warm option. It's a 50-metre, floodlit outdoor pool in London Fields park, Hackney, and the water is heated all year. When we checked, the centre's page showed the pool at 24°C.

Better, run by the charitable social enterprise GLL, operates it for Hackney Council. Lane swimming runs daily, and there's a café and sunbathing terrace. The nearest stations are London Fields and Hackney Downs, with Hackney Central and Bethnal Green also close.

Booking. Book through Better's website or app. Opening hours are listed week by week on the Better page, so check before you go.

Serpentine Lido (Hyde Park)

Serpentine Lido is lake swimming in central London. You swim inside a buoyed area of the Serpentine, with lifeguards on duty. The Royal Parks runs it.

Season. Public swimming usually runs daily from June to mid-September, with weekend sessions from mid-May. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm. In 2026 the last public day is Sunday 27 September. Dates shift a little each year, so check before planning around it.

The club. The Serpentine Swimming Club, which the Royal Parks calls Britain's oldest open-water swimming club, swims in the lido every day from 5.30am to 9.30am. It also holds its well-known Christmas Day race.

Booking. Booking online is recommended to guarantee a place. At quieter times you can walk up and pay on the day.

Rules worth knowing. Under-16s must be with a competent swimmer aged 18 or over, with set adult-to-child ratios. Wetsuits, goggles and snorkels are fine. Weaker swimmers should stay in the shallow areas. The Serpentine is also a designated bathing water. It was rated Good in the Environment Agency's 2025 classifications, up from Sufficient in 2024.

The Hampstead Heath ponds

For natural water all winter, head to the Heath. Kenwood Ladies' Pond and Highgate Men's Pond open every day of the year. The Mixed Pond runs from April to October.

The ponds are deep, opaque and for competent swimmers only. Children must be 8 or over and take a swim test. One more: West Reservoir

If you want open water without the Heath, West Reservoir in Stoke Newington is a man-made lake run by Better. Courses run from 100 to 400 metres, depending on weather and water temperature.

How to check hours, booking and conditions

• Go to the operator, not a listings site. Hours and booking rules change with the seasons, and Brockwell changed operator in 2026.
• Watch the season changeovers. Late September and early October bring big changes. Parliament Hill moves to winter hours, and public swimming ends at Tooting Bec and the Serpentine. Brockwell's winter memberships start.
• Check the water temperature. Tooting Bec, Brockwell and the City of London all publish readings. Unheated pools fall into single figures in winter.
• Bring a card. The Hampstead Heath sites go cashless from 1 October 2026, and several operators take bookings through their apps.
