Swimming in West Lulworth

A pebble beach beside the Jurassic Coast's famous limestone arch, reached by a steep fifteen-minute path down from the cliff-top car park. The water tests Excellent, but there are no lifeguards and the RNLI warns that currents quicken through the arch, so swim along the bay rather than towards it and never jump from the rocks. Early mornings are the quietest.

Castle Cove is a small protected sandy cove on the Dorset coast with calm, sheltered waters perfect for beginner swimmers and families. The cove's enclosed nature provides safety from currents and large swells common on exposed beaches. Wear reef shoes as the cove transitions from sand to rocky bottom.

Church Ope Cove near Portland is a historic, sheltered cove with calm conditions suitable for beginner to intermediate swimmers. The unique setting and protected waters make it an excellent spot for practicing in scenic surroundings.

Lulworth Cove is a famous Dorset circular bay with calm saltwater protected by dramatic limestone formations, ideal for beginner to intermediate swimmers. The sheltered conditions and sandy beach provide excellent visibility and safe entry; arrive at high tide for optimal swimming space and water depth.

Portland Beach offers Dorset coast saltwater with variable conditions and tidal flows around the Portland promontory. Intermediate swimmers manage it well with knowledge of tides; the shingle beach requires appropriate footwear.
