Durdle Door

A pebble beach beside the Jurassic Coast's famous limestone arch, reached by a steep fifteen-minute path down from the cliff-top car park. The water tests Excellent, but there are no lifeguards and the RNLI warns that currents quicken through the arch, so swim along the bay rather than towards it and never jump from the rocks. Early mornings are the quietest.

Know before you go

Best conditions: Calm, settled seas. The estate recommends first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds; neighbouring Man O' War Bay, just east of the arch, is described by the estate as a gentler spot for swimming and paddling.
Getting in: Privately owned by the Lulworth Estate but open to the public all year; no access to the beaches after 9pm or dusk. The path down is steep, takes around 15 minutes and is not suitable for people with disabilities; wear trainers or walking boots.
Parking & transport: Lulworth Estate car park on the cliff top above Durdle Door (satnav BH20 5PU); published tariffs are £15 for up to 6 hours, £25 for up to 9 hours and £35 for 10+ hours, every day of the year. Nearest stations are Wool and Wareham, and seasonal local buses stop at Durdle Door.
Lifeguards: None. The RNLI confirms there is no lifeguard service at Durdle Door or Lulworth Cove.
Water quality: Designated bathing waters Durdle Door East and Durdle Door West were both classified Excellent by the Environment Agency in 2024 and 2025.
Season: Open all year; unguarded in every season. Busiest in the summer holidays.

Submerged rocks: jumping from the arch or rocks has caused serious injuries and deaths
Cliff falls around the sea caves at the foot of the cliffs; do not enter them
