Best conditions

Memorial Day-Labor Day, open-water swimming is allowed only before and after lifeguard shifts (DCR 2021 rules: 5-10 a.m. and 6-8 p.m. weekdays, 7-10 a.m. and 6-8 p.m. weekends). After Labor Day it is allowed during all park hours.

Getting in

DCR state reservation at 915 Walden St., open 5 a.m.-7:30 p.m. A ramped path leads from the Route 126 lot to Main Beach on the southeastern shore. Open-water swimmers must enter and exit through the designated Open Water Swim Lane and tow a brightly colored swim buoy.

Parking & transport

Large lot off Route 126 with a year-round daily fee ($8 MA plates, $30 out-of-state; card or DCR YODEL portal, no cash). The lot closes at capacity (posted at mass.gov/parkalerts), passes do not override closures, and street parking is prohibited.

Lifeguards

DCR lifeguards at Main Beach on weekends and holidays from May 23, then daily June 13-Sept. 7 in 2026, scheduled 10:15 a.m.-5:45 p.m. (subject to staffing). Red Cross Beach is unguarded.

Water quality

Covered by Massachusetts beach testing: freshwater beaches are sampled for E. coli or enterococci within 5 days of opening and at least weekly in season, and posted when results exceed state standards.

Season

Designated swimming area open May 23-Sept. 7 in 2026; the reservation is open year-round.

Who swims here

Walden has a large open-water swimming community, and DCR has managed it with dedicated rules since 2015 (revised 2021). Competitive events and group or shotgun starts are not allowed.

Watch for

• Deep water: the pond reaches 102 feet
• Anglers and paddlers: stay 50 feet from boats and fishermen and 100 feet from the boat launch
• Buoyed no-swim zone between Main Beach and Red Cross Beach when ropes are in place
