Ventura Cove, Mission Bay

Ventura Cove is a sheltered Mission Bay cove off West Mission Bay Drive with no surf and no significant current, which is why triathletes and newer open-water swimmers use it for buoy work. A volunteer-coached, Masters-style group swims here Monday mornings at 7. Expect murkier water than on the ocean side, and note there are no lifeguards from November until spring break.

Know before you go

Best conditions: Calm, contained water with no significant currents or surf; a good place to learn sighting and open-water skills.
Getting in: 1000 West Mission Bay Drive at Gleason Road (signalized intersection); one of Mission Bay's designated swimming areas.
Parking & transport: Free lots sit next to most Mission Bay swim beaches and fill on summer weekends; parking in Mission Bay Park is prohibited from 2 to 4 a.m.
Lifeguards: Guarded daily in summer; after summer, Mission Bay beaches drop to weekends through October, and there are no lifeguards from November to spring break.
Water quality: San Diego County DEH Beach and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program tests for fecal indicator bacteria (same-day ddPCR method since 2022) and posts advisories and closures. Triathlete describes Mission Bay as murkier than ocean swims.
Season: Swimmable year-round; lifeguards are seasonal.
Who swims here: Ventura Cove Masters (Swim Open Waters, with One With the Ocean, Tri Club San Diego and US Masters Swimming) meets Mondays 7:00 to 8:00 AM for free, buoy-based sets. The Mission Bay Triathlon also uses Ventura Cove.
