Ship Bottom Beach, Long Beach Island

Ship Bottom is where the Route 72 causeway lands on Long Beach Island, and in summer its ocean beaches are guarded at street ends from 3rd to 30th. Guards set their stands wherever the water is safest, so the guarded area may sit a little north or south of the listed street. Coverage runs 10 to 6 daily through Labor Day, and 20th Street stays guarded through September 30.

Know before you go

Getting in: Beach badges are sold by the Borough of Ship Bottom; check the borough's badge page for current rates.
Lifeguards: Pre-season (Memorial Day weekend to the weekend before Father's Day): roving patrols by truck or ATV on weekends, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. In season (Saturday before Father's Day to Labor Day): daily 10 a.m.–6 p.m. at 3rd, 7th, 11th, 15th, 20th, 23rd, 26th and 30th Streets and the bay. Post-season to September 30: daily 10 a.m.–6 p.m. at 20th Street.
Water quality: Ocean County Health Department samples salt-water bathing beaches every Monday from mid-May through Labor Day for enterococcus (standard 104 per 100 mL) and closes beaches that fail a re-sample.
Season: Guarded daily from mid-June through Labor Day, with one stand staffed through September 30.
