Alexander Springs

Alexander Springs is a first-magnitude spring in the Ocala National Forest where a gently sloped beach runs into a broad, sand-bottomed basin that stays about 72°F. The easy entry and wide open water make it good for relaxed laps, snorkeling and families, and it is the only spot in the forest where scuba diving is allowed. Weekends fill up, so have a backup plan.

Know before you go

Best conditions: The broad, gently sloped spring pool holds a constant 72°F; weekdays are quieter.
Getting in: Ocala National Forest recreation area on CR 445 in northeast Lake County, between Astor and Altoona. Open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily (may close later seasonally); day-use fees are set by the concessionaire, Naventure.
Parking & transport: On-site parking; expect full sites on weekends, and the area may close when capacity is reached.
Season: Year-round.
Who swims here: The only place in the Ocala National Forest where scuba diving is permitted; paddlers use the spring as the start of the Alexander Run canoe trail.
