Swimming in Clevedon

A 15,000-square-metre seawater lake built in 1929 on the Bristol Channel shore and topped up when big spring tides spill over its wall, so it holds water at every state of the tide. Most swimmers enter by the steps at the wooded end and swim along the sea wall, where it is deepest. It is free and unsupervised; stay out while the lake is overtopping.

Clevedon Beach offers brackish tidal waters in the Severn Estuary with a wide sandy shore and mudflats. Best visited at high tide for deeper water, it suits confident intermediate swimmers aware of tidal ranges. Check tide times before visiting as the beach can be exposed mud at low tide.

Ladye Bay near Portbury is a sheltered cove with relatively calm estuary waters suitable for supervised beginner swimming. The rocky shore requires water shoes, and the tidal range is significant. Visit at high tide for optimal swimming depth and conditions.
