Longsands is a 1.1 km sweep of fine sand between the site of Tynemouth's 1925 outdoor pool and Cullercoats, backed by grassy banks and a promenade. Both the north and south sections were rated Excellent for water quality in 2024 and 2025. It is an easy trip from Newcastle on the Metro, and there are public toilets at each end of the beach.

- Getting in
- Open public beach running north from the site of the former Tynemouth outdoor swimming pool (opened 1925) towards Cullercoats; King Edward's Bay lies just to the south, below the Priory.
- Parking & transport
- Tynemouth Metro station, on the Tyne and Wear Metro Yellow line via Newcastle Central and Whitley Bay, serves the town.
- Water quality
- Designated bathing waters 'Tynemouth Long Sands North' and 'Tynemouth Long Sands South': both classified Excellent by the Environment Agency in 2024 and 2025. Neighbouring King Edward's Bay was also Excellent; Cullercoats, just north, was Poor in both years.
- Facilities
- Public toilets at Longsands South (managed by Crusoes) and Longsands North (managed by The View), open seven days a week
