Sombrero Beach

Marathon's city beach sits at the very end of Sombrero Beach Road, a stretch of Atlantic-facing sand backed by a shady park with pavilions, restrooms and showers. It opens at 7 a.m., which suits a swim before the day heats up. From April through October loggerhead turtles nest here, so expect a few roped-off areas along the sand and give them room.

Know before you go

Getting in: City of Marathon park: turn south on Sombrero Beach Road and drive to the end; open daily 7 a.m. to dusk.
Parking & transport: On-site parking; no RV or bus parking.
Water quality: Florida Department of Health Healthy Beaches Program samples the 'Sombrero Beach' site for enterococci bacteria every 1–2 weeks depending on county (Good 0–35, Moderate 36–70, Poor 71+ per 100 mL); an advisory is issued when a sample and its resample both exceed 70.
Season: Open year-round; sea turtle nesting season runs April through October.
Watch for: Active loggerhead turtle nests (April–October) are marked off; human activity is limited near them
