Oceanside Pier

Oceanside's long wooden pier splits the Strand into two swims: the busier south side, shared with surfers and bodyboarders, and the sandier north side with more room. Both sides are favorites of hardcore local swimmers. Swimming is limited to designated areas in summer, so read the signs, and plan on free street parking back toward the tracks rather than the tightly regulated spots by the pier.

Know before you go

Best conditions: The north side of the pier has more sand and space and is quieter; the south side is the most popular stretch and busier with surfers.
Getting in: From I-5 head west on Mission Avenue, then north on Pacific Street to Pier View Way and the pier. Cars can drop off on the Strand, but there is almost no parking there.
Parking & transport: A mix of free, paid, metered and time-limited parking; free spaces on residential streets toward the train tracks, pre-pay parking along Mission Ave and N. Pacific St., and meters on Pier View Way.
Lifeguards: Oceanside beaches are staffed with lifeguards throughout the year.
Water quality: San Diego County DEH Beach and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program tests for fecal indicator bacteria (same-day ddPCR method since 2022) and posts advisories and closures.
Season: Year-round.
Who swims here: Triathlete points regular swimmers to the Oceanside Swim Club and calls the pier the closest practice spot to the Ironman 70.3 California swim course. At 1,942 feet the pier is one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast.
Watch for: Surfing is popular on both sides of the pier
