Honeymoon Island State Park

Honeymoon Island State Park has about four miles of Gulf shoreline two miles west of Dunedin, with designated swimming areas on the main beach and showers by the boardwalks. There are no lifeguards, so swim with a buddy and check the flag signs at the entrance. Stay out of the water at the north sandspit, where a cut has opened with deep water and strong currents.

Know before you go

Getting in: Florida State Park two miles west of Dunedin; open 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year. Designated swimming areas are on the main beach; the south end has a pet beach. The park is also the ferry terminal for Caladesi Island State Park.
Parking & transport: Park entry is $8 per vehicle.
Lifeguards: None; the park states lifeguards are not provided.
Water quality: Florida Department of Health Healthy Beaches Program samples the 'Honeymoon Island Beach' site for enterococci bacteria every 1–2 weeks depending on county (Good 0–35, Moderate 36–70, Poor 71+ per 100 mL); an advisory is issued when a sample and its resample both exceed 70.
Season: Open year-round, 8 a.m. to sunset.
Watch for: No lifeguards
Since April 2024 a cut has separated the northernmost mile of the sandspit; deep water, rapidly changing depth, underwater hazards and strong currents there, and the park says not to enter the water
Double red flags mean no swimming because of high winds and undertow currents
Red tide (Karenia brevis): FWC says blooms occur in the Gulf almost every year, generally in late summer or early fall, most often between Clearwater and Sanibel Island
