Dover Harbour Beach

The sheltered shingle beach inside Dover's harbour walls is where English Channel hopefuls log their long training swims, in a buoyed swim zone that runs along the shore from April to October. The beach shelves steeply and ferry wash can arrive without warning, so stay inside the buoys, wear a bright hat and keep an eye on boats crossing to the slipway.

Know before you go

Best conditions: Light winds and good visibility. The Port advises against swimming in poor visibility, strong winds or after dark, and suggests a high-visibility cap and tow float.
Getting in: Swimming is allowed in the Outer Harbour recreational area off the town beach. The Port of Dover strongly recommends staying inside the designated swim zone along the shoreline and never swimming into the middle of the harbour or out to the outer wall. Swimmers enter at their own risk, and diving or jumping from piers and structures is advised against.
Parking & transport: Pay-and-display seafront parking on Waterloo Crescent and Marine Parade: £2 an hour or up to £12 for 5 to 10 hours, charged 8am to 6pm, maximum stay 10 hours (Dover District Council).
Lifeguards: No lifeguard service. Port of Dover Police and a Harbour Patrol Launch patrol the recreational area, especially from April to October.
Water quality: Dover Harbour is not one of England's designated bathing waters, so the Environment Agency does not routinely sample it. The nearest designated water, St Margaret's Bay, was rated Excellent in 2025.
Season: The swim-zone buoys are laid from 1 April to 31 October, which is also the official Channel swim season.
Who swims here: The Channel Swimming Association points aspiring Channel swimmers to the harbour for training. Weekend training sessions run on the beach (Dover Channel Training lists Saturdays 10:00 to 17:00 and Sundays 10:00 to 16:00), and for two decades Freda Streeter's volunteer Dover Beach Crew trained Channel swimmers here every weekend of the season.
